In cities throughout New Mexico, composting has become mainstream with an abundance of facilities and programs which provide inventive means to enrich the environment. In doing so, there is not only an environmental profit but a benefit in savings too. The reduction in waste material through composting serves as a conservation tool as the city’s landfill capacity will reduce over time. Interestingly, the city allows homeowner’s the use of up to 250 gallons per day of residential gray water for household gardening, composting or landscaping irrigation- without a permit. Certain neighborhoods in New Mexico also offer a review of your home’s water use patterns and billing at no cost to you. In addition to this, in some instances, you may be eligible for installation of high-efficiency appliances, such as shower heads and faucet aerators. Free leak detection is also available. If you are eligible for a rebate program, you’ll receive a 25 percent of the cost composting discount should you participate in a xeriscape program. This is applied for and approved by the city. The goal of a xeriscape is to create a visually attractive landscape that uses plants selected for their water efficiency. The rebate excludes pre-existing low-water use landscapes. There are other important requirements to meet in order to be eligible for the rebate. For instance, the soil must also be covered with at least two inches of mulch or decorative bark.
